There’s a new kid on the dock!
Built to design in Wailoaloa, Nadi, the Seaview is testament to the skill and capabilities of our nations modern day boat builders. Fijians have a long, respected reputation as boat builders dating back to our ancestors and their ability to hand carve traditional sailing vessels such as the Camakau and Drua.
The SeaView project is the brainchild of company CEO Mr Robert Moigg who said, “At a cost in excess of FJ$1 million, the construction process has made a significant contribution to the Fiji economy, and we know that operation of the SeaView will certainly continue to add to that contribution”.
Heralding a new era in undersea viewing, this air-conditioned 18 meter submarine is the first of it’s kind in the world. Accommodating 49 people, MV SeaView will operate reef-viewing tours close to Malolo Island in the Mamanuca’s on an area called ‘Tabua Reef’. Transfer boats will collect guests from Port Denarau, arriving 30 minutes later at the seaquarium for their tour.
The close partnership between SeaView and traditional iQoliqoli owners of Tabua Reef, has resulted in the declaration of Tabua Reef as a Marine Protected Area (MPA). The community members have pledged to protect the health of the reef and marine life by prohibiting fishing in the area, while MV SeaView by design will provide the best possible viewing experience of the protected underwater environment.
A touchscreen feature beneath the interior window allows guests to access interactive information about the reef and marine life.
14 large, 50mm thick Plexiglass windows have each been equipped with a ‘red’ filter to enhance undersea viewing. There is also a series of 28 high candlepower LED light arrays along the outside of the hull which illuminate the reef at night to create a ‘seaquarium’.
“Our company is excited to move into the next stage and start operations of the SeaView at Tabua Reef,” said Mr Moigg.
The building of a vessel such as this in Fiji clearly shows that the industry is able to compete at a world standard!
